Chapter 17

Noah

Mel’s Rule of Life Number 40: If at first you don't succeed, by all means try again. But for goodness sake, take a minute to analyze why you didn’t succeed the first time.

“MEL!” EMILY CALLS FROM across the room as Mel and I enter the ballroom a few minutes later in search of sustenance. We need to continue our investigation, but I also know Mel hasn’t had anything to eat since breakfast. So I suggested we grab a quick bite while we think through our suspect list again.

“Hey!” Mel waves at Emily, then grabs my arm with a surprisingly strong grip. “Oh my gosh, Noah, do not let me tell her about Montgomery proposing, okay?”

I bite back a laugh. This is actually a legitimate concern. Mel can be a bit of a blabbermouth when she’s excited about something. Not once during the nearly three decades of our friendship has she been able to surprise me with a present, she accidentally told me about my sister Leah’s pregnancy before Leah (who’d called Mel when I didn’t answer) got the chance, and I know the ending to a surprising number of mystery novels thanks to her desperate need to tell someone who did it and how she knew the whole time.

“On it,” I tell her, attempting to look serious rather than amused. Satisfied, Mel heads Emily’s way, a bright smile pasted on her face as she weaves through the tables of people. Quite a few of the sequestered wedding guests are hanging out in here as they wait for their turn to be interviewed by the police. Right now, nobody looks too restless. Probably because they were all supposed to be here for the wedding anyway. Still, that’ll change soon enough; once one person asks to go home, everybody will.

We’ve got to make some headway on this case, and soon.

“Emily, hey!” Mel greets her as we arrive at her table. They give each other a hug in that way that women always seem to do. “Where’s Reed?”

“Oh he’s over at the bar grabbing me something to drink.” Emily points across the room. “He’s being kind of weird,” she admits. “He keeps saying he just wants to make sure all of my needs are taken care of and that I’m having a good time.” She wrinkles her nose. “We’re at a crime scene—I feel like it would be in poor taste to say I’m having a good time.” She shakes her head and a rueful smile pops onto her face. “Although, it is really nice not to be one of the suspects.”

“I’ll bet,” Mel agrees, her voice high-pitched and a little manic. I’m going to have to get her out of here stat.

Emily definitely notices the odd timber of Mel’s voice. She peers more closely at her. “Are you okay, Mel? Gosh, this must be so awful for you, having one of your residents,” her voice drops, “murdered.”

Mel nods, pursing her lips. “Awful,” she mumbles.

“Yeah, but we’ll find whoever did it,” I interject, hoping to save her from herself.
